Pic of the Week

This beautiful picture of a sunrise I took whilst on a morning swim in the bay this week. (I took my phone out with me to capture it.) This pic is completely unedited and shows the genuine colors of the morning sunrise reflecting on the water. Stunning! The world keeps spinning and nature keeps doing her amazing thing despite the mess humans create for themselves. Nature is so healing, get out in it and let her do her work on you.


Here are the top three things that have made a difference in my week.
They might also be useful for you, or not.


1) Another 5-day fast I’m on...

Fast Mimicking Diet (FMD)Research done by Valter Longo shows that fasting has DRAMATIC POSITIVE effects on cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disease.

As one of the world's leading researchers on youth-span, and senescence (aging) his work is worth listening to. This podcast interview with Rich Roll and Valter is a great summary of the benefits of fasting and the longevity diet. Definitely listen to it. The cool thing about this 5-day fast is you get to eat certain foods that mimic you have fasted. At the time of writing this blog I was 3 days in and feeling great. In fact, a painful knee I’ve had for 3 months (chronically inflamed patella tendon) that stopped me running on my recent Adventure race has gone from an 8/10 pain to a 3/10 in just 3 days, just by fasting. Seriously worth checking FMD out. I know you could do it.


2) A business my son Logan just launched...

Paladin ArmouryDesigned for the public who want to wear a protective mask. An all AU business promoting quality cloth face masks for public use as recommended by the CDC and many other overseas countries based on a number of research studies that show a benefit in wearing well-fitting face masks. (Checkout Paladin Armoury Facebook Page for some of the research) Please do not use medical-grade masks (N95) as these must be saved for healthcare workers on the front line only.

These good looking masks are produced in Victoria and designed with 3 layers of woven polyester (not cotton) including an antibacterial moisture-wicking layer to keep the mask dry and bacteria-free. I reckon a great initiative to help those who choose to wear a mask, use a quality well-fitting mask, whilst saving the medical-grade masks for our hospitals and health care workers. REMEMBER, HOWEVER...

Face masks, hand washing, social distancing etc. are not a replacement for a focus on improving your health. Good nutrition, mindset and moving your body are key measures to ensuring you remain healthy rather than just avoid sickness.


3) A book I bought this week...

Bluezones Cookbook. Building on decades of research, longevity expert Dan Buettner has gathered 100 recipes inspired by the Blue Zones, home to the healthiest and happiest communities in the world. Each dish--for example, Sardinian Herbed Lentil Minestrone; Costa Rican Hearts of Palm Ceviche; Cornmeal Waffles from Loma Linda, California; and Okinawan Sweet Potatoes--uses ingredients and cooking methods proven to increase longevity, wellness, and mental health.
